- Collector
- Mike King (originator MK O12)
- First described
- 2013
- Type
- single clone named
Origin
Mike King-sourced oreophila with a more readily-expressed red throat than typical Sand Mountain variants. Mike (post #1, 2013) believes the trait is strongly genetic — easily coaxed to color up.
Standout traits
- Strong genetic red-throat expression
- Earlier color development than other oreophila variants
- Full red pitcher with dark red veins possible under ideal conditions
Cultivation notes
Outdoor Northern California. Color expression starts late June.
Standout traits
- Red throat is more readily expressed than other oreophila variants — Mike (post #1, 2013): 'this purple throat clone (MKO12) seems to readily produce a red throat when most of the other plants are still not so colorful'
- Mike's hypothesis: red-throat character is strongly genetic with a dash of environmental influence — 'not too difficult to coax this plant to produce a red throat unlike with many other spectacular color forms of S. oreophila'
- Capable of full pitcher reddening with dark red veins under right environmental conditions
- Sand Mountain comparison: Sand Mountain variants are 'pretty timid in terms of producing a solid red throat' — MK O12 is more readily expressed
Cultivation
Outdoor Northern California. Red-throat expression starts in late June (Mike's 2013 documentation), starting as veiny pattern that fills in over time. MK O12 reaches color expression earlier in the season than other oreophila variants in Mike's collection.

Naming
"MK O12" — Mike King's accession code (O-series for oreophila; MK O17 is a separate purple-throat clone with its own entry at oreophila/purple-throat-mk017/). "Purple throat" describes the red-throat-with-veining phenotype.
