Mike's standout S. montana clone from M.R.'s pre-2013 batch of Transylvania Co, NC plants. Distinct from the HxC clone, a different plant Mike grew out post-2014 from seed and also labeled "best clone." See parent group for context.
Origin
Acquired by Mike Wang in or before 2013 from a friend identified only as "M.R." M.R. had collected multiple S. montana clones from Transylvania County, NC. This individual is the standout from M.R.'s batch and also the standout among Mike's other Transylvania Co. montanas. Mike notes it looks slightly different from his other Transylvania Co montanas, suggesting it may originate from a different sub-population within the county.
The Transylvania County collection site(s) and the year of original wild collection are [MISSING].
History
- 2013-10-30: First documented on the forum. Mike praises the clone as "the best clone from a friend of mine (M.R.), and consequently, when compared to all my other montanas from the same county, this plant is also my best clone too!"
- 2014-09-05: Update photos. Forum member rmeyer notes one photo from this update was used as the 2015 Forum T-shirt design — supporting Meadowview's conservation efforts. [VERIFY]
- 2015-08-01: Update photos — "getting fat."
- 2018-07-11: Update photos. Some divisions had gone dormant from extreme heat a few weeks prior; interestingly, a few sent up flower stalks instead.
- 2018-09-16: Final update photos in this thread, showing the more classic montana coloration after Mike noted a member preferred it over the more painted juvenile form.
Standout traits
- Intense red veining — "talk about intense veins" (Mike, 2013).
- Outstanding pitcher shape.
- Slow to build up rhizome size, but grows quickly once established.
- Colors up further as the season progresses.
- Heat-sensitive: extreme heat can drive some divisions dormant.
Cultivation notes
This is a slow-to-mature clone that takes time to size up but rewards patience. Heat tolerance is a known limit — observed in 2018 with divisions going dormant and a few responding atypically by sending up flower stalks.

Cultivation
Slow to size up but rewarding when it does. Heat sensitivity: divisions went dormant after extreme heat in 2018, with a few responding by initiating flowers off-season. Color intensifies as the season progresses; fall pitchers are at the plant's prime.

Naming
Mike's informal label for the standout individual in M.R.'s batch of Transylvania Co, NC montanas. Mike notes it looked slightly different from his other Transylvania Co montanas, suggesting it may originate from a different population.
