A standout red S. leucophylla selected from a private-property field in Southern Baldwin Co, AL — Mike picked it from "hundreds of thousands" of leucophyllas at the site. Sturdier and more reliable than Wilkerson's Red Rocket. Documented from 2015 to 2020 (16 Mike photos).
Origin
Wild-origin S. leucophylla from Southern Baldwin Co, AL. Acquired with permission from a private-property field; only divisible plants were taken, leaving the mother plant in situ.
Original collector role and acquisition year are [MISSING].
History
- Pre-2015: Mike acquires the division from the field.
- 2015-09-20 (post 1): First forum doc. Mike frames the clone as serious WRR competition.
- 2015-10-04: Update — older traps developing red lips.
- 2017-09-22 (post 6): Updated photos; clone is stunning.
- 2017-09-28 (post 15): Mike confirms only 3 divisions sent out total; multi-year propagation queue starts.
- 2018-06-26 (post 20): Propagation status — down to a single growth point with no traps that year. Mike notes the clone is "somewhat a pain in the arse to grow."
- 2019-10-06 (post 25): Update from Mike — colors up reliably year over year despite the propagation challenges.
- 2020-07-21 (leo, post 26): Forum member leo's Mike-acquired plant is "the best for me with this monster."
Standout traits
- Field-selected from hundreds of thousands — extreme selection pressure.
- Sturdy traps — beats WRR on structural strength.
- Phenomenal red coloration, white-ish throat.
- Reliable year-over-year under Mike's NorCal conditions despite slow propagation.
Cultivation notes
Warm spring → decent summer; fall is the showstopper. Trap age matters. Plan for slow propagation.

Standout traits
- Stood out from hundreds of thousands of leucophyllas in the wild field — Mike's defining selection criterion
- Traps are tall, stout, sturdy — NOT flimsy like Wilkerson's Red Rocket
- Phenomenal red color, deepening as nights cool
- Reliably colors up year after year under Mike's NorCal outdoor conditions, though traps need age for optimal color
- Some traps develop red lips as they age
- Surprisingly white-ish throat (Mike, post 6, 2017-09-22)
- Outperforms 'marginal red leucophyllas' of the previous generation that were difficult to grow and rarely produced fall traps
- Limited propagation: Mike sent out only 3 divisions originally; in 2018 he was 'down to a single growth point' personally
- Pain to propagate — 'somewhat a pain in the arse to grow' (Mike, 2018-06-26)
Cultivation
- Keep warm during spring for decent summer trap production.
- Real potential is in fall pitchers. Don't judge spring/ summer flush.
- Color builds with trap age — newly opened traps aren't fully red.
- Cool-night-driven color deepening — typical leucophylla pattern.
- Propagation is challenging. Plan for slow stock build-up.

Naming
Mike's descriptive 'RED' label. Selected from "100's of 1000's of leucophylla clones" in the field — Mike (post 25, 2019-10-22): "this plant stood out from the rest!"
