A standout S. jonesii population from Greenville County, SC — distinct from "regular" jonesii in that it stays red in full sun throughout the growing season, not just in fall. Multiple individuals in cultivation; mostly red, with an uncommon green variant. CITES-restricted. Documented from 2015 to 2025/2026 (33 Mike photos).
Origin
Wild-origin S. jonesii from a site in Greenville County, SC — described by wireman as "amazing." Original collector and collection year are [MISSING]. This is an endangered species (CITES-restricted); legitimate distribution generally goes through the ICPS.
The accession is a population — multiple individuals in cultivation collectively labelled 'RED' Greenville Co, SC. Most are red; a small number are green (Mike, 2023-01).
History
- Wild origin / collection: details [MISSING].
- Pre-2015: Mike acquires (year [MISSING]).
- 2015-04-06 (post 1): First forum doc.
- 2015-07-06 (post 8): Mike's clarifying photograph — RED Greenville on left, "regular" jonesii on right, same full sun, dramatic color difference.
- 2018-04-23 (post 10): Flowers shown; Mike notes the sweet raspberry fragrance.
- 2020 / 2022 / 2023 / 2025: Continued documentation.
- 2026-01-15 (post 18): Latest update — clones didn't color up this year for whatever reason.
Standout traits
- Red across the whole season — not just fall.
- Sweet raspberry-scented flowers.
- Vigorous in cultivation despite endangered in the wild.
- Population diversity — green variant exists alongside red.
Cultivation notes
Standard jonesii care; full sun encouraged. The clone's color expression is largely autonomous of summer heat / shading patterns that affect other jonesii lines.

Standout traits
- Red throughout the entire growing season — not just in fall (Mike's defining distinction vs 'regular' jonesii)
- Spring pitchers come up red even on plants where every winter trap was cut off
- Sweet raspberry-like flower fragrance (Mike, post 10, 2018-04-23)
- Almost weed-like vigor in cultivation despite being endangered in the wild (Mike, post 18, 2026-01-15)
- Population includes a less-common green variant alongside the dominant red form
- Some BLACK LIPS individuals are present in the population — see related 'Black Lips' clone page
Cultivation
- Full sun = full color. Other 'red' jonesii clones (e.g. jdallas's Meadowview / Henderson Co accessions) need shade breaks to stay green or rainy summers to fade. This Greenville Co accession STAYS red even with full sun all season.
- Vigorous and easy — Mike (2026-01) calls them "almost weeds in the collection" despite their CITES-protected wild status.
- Standard jonesii care otherwise.

Naming
Mike's 'RED' descriptor distinguishes this Greenville Co accession from "regular" jonesii clones — Mike (post 8): the RED Greenville Co plants stay red in full sun throughout the entire growing season, whereas regular jonesii clones (e.g. Mike's clones from elsewhere) only color up in fall under cool conditions. Most of the population is red but a green variant also exists (Mike, post 16, 2023-01-14).
