- 'Blood in the Snow'
A Brooks-Garcia-named hybrid with intense red color contrast against white pitcher background — vigorous, fall-show clone with leucophylla ancestry. Mike documented the clone over a decade (2014-2024), tracking the progressive color development from juvenile pink to mature blood-red with white tops.
History
Mike acquired the plant from Brooks Garcia (Sarracenia Obsessed), introducing it on the forum in 2014-12-05 (post #1). Mike's framing: "this plant really should be registered if it hasn't already been."
calen (post #3, 2014) immediately suggested it as a candidate parent for crossing with Mike's S. 'Elaine Wang.'
By 2019 (post #7), the clone was producing strong fall traps with notably white tops. By 2024 (post #12), full multi-year color expression was on display.
alexis (post #10, 2022) reported actively breeding from the clone — 'Blood in the Snow' × AS 2-year-old seedlings looking promising.
Standout traits
- Intense color contrast — name accurately describes visual effect
- Strong fall pitcher show
- White-topped, well-veined mature pitchers
- Vigorous, robust
- Used in breeding by other growers
Cultivation notes
- Outdoor NorCal; standard hybrid culture.
- Multi-year acclimation for full color expression.
- Fall flush is the showcase season.
Standout traits
- Intense red/pink color contrast against white pitcher background — name describes the visual effect well
- Real show in fall — biggest, most colorful traps appear in fall (Mike, post #1, 2014)
- Robust, vigorous grower (Mike, post #1)
- White-topped traps with strong veining — 2019 photos (post #7) Mike highlights 'check out those white tops!'
- Excellent rain-shedding lid morphology (bogman, post #8, 2019)
- Mike speculates pink-color phase under California outdoor establishment may deepen to true blood-red as plant matures (post #1, 2014); 2018-2024 photo series tracks the color development
Cultivation
- Outdoor Northern California.
- Multi-year acclimation expected — Mike's plant was still establishing in 2014 (post #1); progressive color intensification visible in 2018-2024 photo updates.
- Fall is the peak season for color expression.
- alexis (post #10, 2022): 2-year-old seedlings of 'Blood in the Snow' × AS look promising — actively used in breeding.
