- single clone
- Cultivar
- 'YELLOW GIANT'
Origin
Mike-bred F1 cross between two of his proven giant S. flava var. rugelii clones. Out of a large seed batch, the smallest seedlings were culled and the largest 10 were retained — YELLOW GIANT is one of those 10. Sown ~2020 (3 years before the 2023 thread).
Standout traits
- Striking yellow trap color.
- Mouth ~3" wide on traps barely a foot tall — classic giant signal.
- Heavy girth in cramped community-tray conditions.
- Mike rates this among the best-performing giant rugeliis in his collection — outcrossing yielded F1 vigor without being a true hybrid.
Cultivation notes
Currently growing cramped; not yet at full size potential. Mike expects significant size-up once given individual pot space.
Standout traits
- Striking, intense yellow trap color.
- Top-10 selection from a large pheno-hunt batch (smallest culled, biggest 10 retained).
- Mouth ~3 inches wide on traps under a foot tall — classic giant signal.
- Heavy girth despite modest trap height in current cramped conditions.
- Mike rates this one of the best-performing giant rugeliis in his collection — selective-breeding hybrid vigor without being a hybrid.
- Floppy / oversized hood on at least one sibling clone (May 2024).
Cultivation
Currently community-tray cramped — Mike anticipates significant size-up with proper space. Outcrossing of two giants gave classic hybrid-vigor- like results in the F1.
