The historic, formally-registered Sarracenia cultivar — Bob Hanrahan's wild collection from Colquitt Co, GA in the 1980s-1990s. Genetic giant: extraordinarily large lids, big traps, well-defined red throat under greenhouse conditions. Mike's outdoor NorCal cultivation: poor performance after 6 years (cool climate hates this clone). 15 photos: 8 Mike + 5 adaetz100 + 1 almightydolla + (CC archive shots by Mike). Mike is breeding it via cross with rugelii Thomas Co, GA giant for hybrid vigor in cool climates.
Standout traits
- Extraordinarily gigantic lid
- Gigantic traps under greenhouse conditions
- Well-defined red throat
- Slow-growing genetic giant
- Performs best under glass / subtropical conditions; struggles outdoors in cool climates (NorCal-style)
- almightydolla and adaetz100 (2020-2024) confirm aesthetically perfect rugelii form even at modest size
Cultivation
- Hates cool climates. After 6 years outdoors in NorCal, Mike's plant has produced only phyllodia or small traps (post 50321, 2024).
- Greenhouse / subtropical preferred. Mike's experience growing at California Carnivores in greenhouse: dependable giant traps every year. Outdoor cooler climates: erratic.
- Breeding workaround. Mike crossed Bob Hanrahan with the giant rugelii from Thomas Co, GA — those F1 seedlings are vigorous and growing well, suggesting the genes can express in cooler climates with hybrid vigor.

Naming
Formal cultivar registered in CPN v42n3p107-109. Named after Bob Hanrahan who collected and propagated the plants. Mike notes Marilee Maerts (former CC co-owner) once told a young Mike Wang she was going to name the plant after her son — Damon and Peter chose 'Bob Hanrahan' instead.
