Mike Wang's multi-generation, decade+ ornata breeding line
selected for cleaner, heavier red venation, easier cultivation,
and more traps year-round. As of 2018-04, propagation was
slow; updated 2026-04 photos show continued expression of the
selected traits. 8 Mike photos (2018, 2019, 2026). 'improved
solid red throat' is a sub-selection from this line —
../improved-solid-red-throat/.
Standout traits
- Crystal clear, heavy red venation with reduced red pigment between the veins
- Easier to grow than the founder ornatas (selected trait)
- Produces traps year-round (selected trait)
- Trap on a flagged 2018 individual was 'not giant' but with a notably big head relative to height
- Comparable to Mike's 'improved black veins' breeding line as a paired companion
Cultivation
- Mike noted (2018-04-30) he had not been able to propagate the plant recently but was hoping for divisions within ~1 year.
- "Heavy red venation" trait described as "very environmentally induced" — expect environmental modulation of pigment.
- As of 2026-04, Mike posted updated photos showing continued expression after ~8 more years of cultivation.

Naming
Mike's label — an 'improved' version of a really good red-veined S. flava var. ornata, selected for: easier cultivation, more traps year-round, and more pronounced (cleaner) red venation with less red pigment between the veins. Mike contrasts it with naturally-occurring ornata: he initially thought no wild ornata matched the clarity of his selection, but conceded after seeing philcula's 2018 wild photos that wild plants can also show heavy red venation — though typically with more red micro- veins / pigment between the heavier veins than the 'improved' selection.
