- 'improved'
Origin
Mike's controlled cross of two ornatas:
- Mother: S. flava var. ornata from Prince George Co, VA. Source of the "amazing veination" trait.
- Father: S. flava var. ornata from Bulloch Co, GA. Source of the pitcher-shape trait.
The seedling batch yielded multiple selected individuals. The 2011 thread documents at least two: the originally-named 'improved' clone (medium-fast, no offshoots) and a second clone with more intense vein color (slow, freely-offshooting).
This is the foundation generation of Mike's multi-decade ornata breeding line. The second-generation 'improved 2.0' (cluster C0789, 2026) is the iterative refinement of these original selections.
Standout traits
- Inherits 'amazing veination' from the Prince George Co, VA mother.
- Inherits 'pitcher shape' from the Bulloch Co, GA father.
- Multiple distinct individuals selected — at least 2 documented in 2011 thread (the named 'improved' standout + a second 'more intense vein color' clone).
- First-named clone: medium-fast growing, doesn't form offshoots easily.
- Second clone: more intense vein color, forms offshoots freely, slow growing.
- Foundation generation for Mike's iterative ornata breeding line — culminating in 'improved 2.0' (cluster C0789, 20+ years later).
Cultivation
Standard outdoor Sarracenia care. Mike's photos document multi- year color/morphology stability across the selected clones. Environmental conditions and time of year significantly affect the visible color — the same clone looks dramatically different year-over-year (Mike's 2011 vs prior-year side-by-side photos).

Naming
"improved" — Mike's name for the cross batch reflecting the improvement target (combining Prince George Co venation with Bulloch Co pitcher shape). Foundation of the multi-decade breeding line that later produced 'improved 2.0' (cluster C0789).
