- First described
- 2016
A separate-origin black-veined S. flava var. ornata — distinct from the well-known Bulloch Co, GA black-veins lineage that dominates cultivation. Mike's small Okaloosa Co accession is genetically independent and could open new breeding combinations. Documented only in 2016 (4 Mike photos).
Origin
Wild-origin S. flava var. ornata from Okaloosa Co, FL. Original collector and date are [MISSING].
History
- Pre-2016: Mike acquires.
- 2016-07-31 (post 1): First and only Mike-photo forum doc. Plant is small; Mike actively trying to propagate.
- 2018-07-09 (post 2, boggrower): Forum interest in crossing black-veins + black-lips + atropurpurea colors.
Standout traits
- Lid-top black venation — defining trait.
- Distinct genetic origin from the Bulloch Co lineage.
- Red pigments between the veins — less clean but more colorful look.
- Red veins age to black — typical color trajectory of black-veins lineages.
Cultivation notes
Standard ornata care.

Standout traits
- Black veins on the lid top — defining trait, distinct from the Bulloch Co lineage
- Veins start RED on the trap and BLACKEN with age — same age trajectory as the Bulloch Co black-veins lineage
- Less 'clean' venation than Bulloch Co — red pigments between the veins (more colorful overall, but lower vein contrast)
- Body has standard red venation; only the lid top develops the black-veins trait so far
- Possibly substantial red pigments in the throat (Mike's 2016 hopeful observation)
- Very small plant when first documented; Mike actively trying to bulk it for distribution
- Behaves like a typical gulf-coast FL ornata under Mike's NorCal outdoor conditions, with the black-veins lid-top exception
- High breeding interest — possible cross with Bulloch Co black-lipped ornata could yield novel combinations
Cultivation
Standard ornata culture under Mike's NorCal outdoor conditions produces typical gulf-coast ornata behavior plus the black-veins lid-top trait. Wait for traps to age before judging vein color.

Naming
Mike's descriptive 'black veins' label. Distinct from the well- known Bulloch Co, GA black veined ornata population — this Okaloosa Co, FL accession is a separate genetic source for the black-veins trait. Mike (post 1, 2016-07-31): "Almost all of the black veined flava genes you see in cultivation today came from the Bulloch Co, GA black veined population... let's talk about this special black veined Okaloosa Co, FL flava ornata."
