Origin
A S. flava var. maxima population from Montgomery Co, North Carolina. Hilly-habitat origin — unusual for flavas, which normally grow in coastal lowland savannah bogs. The wild site is partially forested (plants there don't receive full sun).
Standout traits
- Consistently extremely yellow year over year in Mike's full-sun cultivation.
- Easy to grow — unlike other rot-prone NC flavas (e.g., Brunswick Co).
- Newer to cultivation — population is just beginning to circulate.
History
First documented 2023-05-19. Mike formally labeled at least one standout clone in May 2025 and is propagating it individually — that clone may merit its own entry once named.
Cultivation notes
Vigorous; color stability is high. Mike notes that the wild plants likely don't color this intensely because the site is shaded.
Standout traits
- Consistently extremely yellow year over year (in Mike's full-sun NorCal cultivation).
- Hilly-habitat origin — atypical for flavas, which usually inhabit lowland coastal savannah bogs.
- Easy to grow — unlike other NC flavas (e.g., Brunswick Co flavas, which are rot-prone).
- Newer to cultivation — Mike believes these are just starting to circulate.
- At least one individual clone has been formally labeled and singled out for individual propagation (May 2025).
Cultivation
Vigorous, yellow color stable in Mike's collection across multiple seasons. In wild habitat, plants likely don't color as intensely as Mike's cultivation examples — wild plants are partially shaded.
