- Type
- single clone conservation extirpated site
Mike's separate atro selection from the destroyed Cook's Bayou site — distinct from S. 'Cooke's Bayou Red' (= MKF134, registered). Dark purple lip + very deep red traps; trap-aging interior color development.
Cooke's Bayou Red context
S. 'Cooke's Bayou Red' is the formally-registered cultivar from this same site (CPN v44n3, p.156-163). John Hummer + Phil Sheridan preservation lineage. Mike King distributes it as MKF134. Spelling: 'Cooke's' (registration), 'Cook's' (Google Maps), 'Cooks Bayou' (local signage per calen post #5, 2016). Mike's clone is a sibling-population selection.
Standout traits
- **Distinct from S. 'Cooke's Bayou Red'** — Mike's clone is a separate atropurpurea selection from same destroyed site
- Dark purple lip + very deep red traps
- Interior starts green a day or two after opening, then turns solid dark red as the trap ages
- Beautiful unique-shape lid
- Flower has more flava-dominance than 'Cooke's Bayou Red' (Mike, post #13, 2017) — but still has non-yellow pigments in petals
- Czech-out variant lid clone (Mike, post #16, 2021): extended lid, possibly evolved for heavy rain protection
- Mike (post #13, 2017): 'I'm still a firm believer that all atropurpureas, regardless of where they come from, are of hybrid origin.'
Cultivation
- Outdoor Northern California; trap-aging required for full color expression.
- Distribution well-established (Mike, hcarlton, jyd, others).
