Origin
Multiple coppery-topped S. alata cupreas from the same Eastern Louisiana site (specific county not given [MISSING]). Mike selected the first cuprea ~2020-2021; a second clone was recognized as a cuprea on 2022-11-30, just minutes before posting the thread.
Standout traits
- Coppery-orange trap top — defining var. cuprea trait.
- Multiple distinct individuals from the same site, useful for genetic comparison.
- Vigorous despite the rarity of the variety in cultivation.
Cultivation notes
Color expression peaks when the plant is left undisturbed multi-year. After Mike divided plants in winter 2023, the 2024 fall traps were noticeably less cuprea — recovery expected as plants re-establish.
Standout traits
- Coppery-orange trap top — defining cuprea trait.
- Multiple distinct clones from the same Eastern LA site (one selected ~2020-2021, plus a 'new' clone discovered Nov 2022 via accidental phenotype-recognition).
- Vigorous growth despite scarcity in cultivation.
- Color expression suppressed temporarily after recent division — color forms peak when undisturbed.
Cultivation
Color forms benefit from being left undisturbed multi-year. After the winter 2023 division event, the 2024 traps were noticeably less cuprea than peak.
