- 'early red'
Origin
A S. alata var. atrorubra clone from Stone Co, Mississippi, selected by Mike for two related traits: full red coloration and earlier seasonal color development than its population peers.
Standout traits
- Colors up reliably and earlier than population peers.
- Visually approaches S. alata 'Night' but is easier to color.
Cultivation notes
Recently transplanted material skipped color in the year after transplant; full color returned by fall 2023.
Standout traits
- Colors up earlier in the season than other clones from the same population.
- Reaches full red coloration consistently.
- Mike: 'almost (but not quite!) looks like a glorified S. alata Night Stone Co, MS' — but easier to color.
Cultivation
Selected and transplanted ~2021-2022; skipped color in the immediate post- transplant year and fully colored by fall 2023 (~2 years after transplant). Not yet in circulation as of late 2023 — under evaluation.

Naming
'Early red' — selected for ability to color up earlier than other Stone Co atrorubras (in addition to fully coloring).
